Portrait of Wael Dahdouh, Journalist

Wael Dahdouh

Journalist Al Jazeera Palestine & Gaza Gaza Palestinian

Wael Dahdouh is Al Jazeera’s Gaza bureau chief and the face of the network’s Arabic coverage of the war. In October 2023, he learned live on air that an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp had killed his wife, his 15-year-old son Mahmoud, his 7-year-old daughter Sham, and his one-year-old grandson. He went back on air the next day. In December 2023, his colleague Samer Abudaqa was killed beside him. On 7 January 2024, his eldest son Hamza — a journalist himself — was killed by a drone strike. Dahdouh has been wounded twice. He has lost his wife, three of his children, a grandson, and his closest colleague. He kept reporting. He is still reporting.
