Mariam Abu Daqqa was a 33-year-old freelance photographer working with the Associated Press and other outlets during the Gaza war. Known as the adventurer for her work documenting the impact of Israel’s military campaign on children and civilian life. She was killed on 25 August 2025 in a double-tap Israeli strike on Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis that also killed Reuters cameraman Hussam al-Masri, Al Jazeera contributor Mohammed Salama, and others. Days before she was killed, she wrote a letter to her 13-year-old son Gaith, who had left Gaza at the start of the war to live with his father in the UAE. Algeria’s UN ambassador read the letter to the Security Council, his voice breaking.
