Photojournalist The Star South Africa Thokoza, South Africa South African

Ken Oosterbroek was a photojournalist for The Star in Johannesburg and a member of the Bang-Bang Club, four conflict photographers who documented the township violence during South Africa’s transition from apartheid. He won the Ilford Award as South African Press Photographer of the Year and multiple World Press Photo prizes. On 18 April 1994, six days before South Africa’s first free elections, he was shot dead by friendly fire from National Peacekeeping Force soldiers while covering fighting in Thokoza township. His colleague Greg Marinovich was seriously wounded in the same incident. His death devastated fellow Bang-Bang Club member Kevin Carter, who took his own life three months later.
