Hamza Dahdouh was a 27-year-old Palestinian journalist and cameraman for Al Jazeera, and the eldest son of Gaza bureau chief Wael Dahdouh. In October 2023, an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat refugee camp killed his mother, his 15-year-old brother Mahmoud, his 7-year-old sister Sham, and his one-year-old nephew. On 7 January 2024, Hamza was killed by a drone strike on his car while returning from filming the aftermath of a strike near Rafah. Israel claimed he was travelling with a terror operative, then changed their story to say the journalists’ use of a camera drone made them look like terrorists. The Washington Post investigated and found no indications he was operating as anything other than a journalist.
