Dom Phillips was a British freelance journalist who had lived in Brazil for 15 years and contributed regularly to The Guardian, the Washington Post, and other outlets. He was researching a book about the Amazon rainforest when he and Brazilian Indigenous expert Bruno Pereira were murdered on 5 June 2022 in the Vale do Javari region of Amazonas state, an area deeply affected by illegal fishing, logging, and mining. Their bodies were found 10 days later. Three men were arrested and charged with the murders.
