Anna Politkovskaya was a Russian journalist and human rights activist who reported on the Second Chechen War and documented human rights abuses by Russian forces and Chechen authorities for the independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta. She survived a poisoning attempt in 2004. On 7 October 2006, she was shot dead in the elevator of her apartment building in Moscow. Five men were eventually convicted of her murder, but the person who ordered the killing has never been identified or prosecuted.
